Oops it fell down.

 Tied it back up.

That lasted about a week.

Then yesterday it fell the other direction into the beans.

So I cut it down.

Anyone need some cut flowers?

Smile, It's Summer

Spotted this while running errands today.

It just looks like it is smiling.

As Dad's Garden Grows

The tallest stalks are around 8' tall now.

Soon enough we will be having corn coming out our ears.

The rest of the garden is in a bit of a shambles.  The lettuce went bitter.  The weeds took over.  I pulled most of them, but there might still be a few carrots and beets hiding in the weed patch at the left.

It rained a lot a couple days ago, but things are drying out again.  Time for more weeding, watering, transplanting, and planting a few more seeds on a gamble that they will produce before winter returns.

As Primary Election Day Approach-eth

Let it be known throughout the land that our answering machine has been set to pick up after two rings, and the phone ringer has been silenced.  We will do our own research regarding candidates, because the advertising only tells us very selectively what the candidates'  PR people want us to know.

Our sincerest apologies if you are a friend or relative who actually called to speak with us.  If you leave a message, we will return your call in a timely fashion, unless of course you are also avoiding answering your phone over the next twenty-four hours.

Here We Go Again

It Grew.

The pole beans are producing well, for now.

The ongoing attempt to kill the voles in the garden is being met with mixed results.  There is at least one that keeps escaping the traps, and it is eating the tops off the carrots -

perhaps the bottoms too.

We will have to wait and see about the tomatoes.

It has been such a cool summer, I have my doubts that the yields will be anywhere near the ones of last summer.

The Roma type yellow pole bean is a new experiment.

So far they are very tender but can tend to grow into some pretty strange shapes, and the yields aren't all that stellar.

Just for you to prove the garden is nowhere near perfect,

here is a mutant sunflower.

The tomato plants and the cucumbers at mom's garden are almost a complete loss, but the beans seem to be compensating a bit.

The corn is tasseling at dad's place.  Some of it is heading for 6' tall, while other stalks are straggling at 4'.  I am looking forward to it being done as soon as possible, so that I can plant something I actually want into the prime sunny spots that it is hogging.  One rabbit and a squirrel have been relocated, and the cucumbers seem to be doing better with them gone.

One question - Do pimento/cherry peppers turn red on the stalk when they are ripe?  Dad's pepper plants are loaded, but I don't know if they are ready to pick yet.
